Triptych 1—Surveillance

Fashion Institute of Technology
Junior Triptych Show 2018

each panel 24x36”
Triptych for the Logan Symposium, which discusses themes including investigative journalism and mass surveillance.

This set describes a digital journey from a list of surveillance devices (panel 1), to several video feeds (panel 2), and a single video feed of an office. The spider that has crawled onto the cctv camera represents the sinister nature of modern mass surveillance.

Triptych 2—Panopticon

Fashion Institute of Technology
Junior Triptych Show 2018

each panel 24x36”
In this set, I visually compare modern surveillance with the ethical concept of the Panopticon, famously written about by Michel Foucault in Discipline and Punish.

Panel 1 features a bird’s eye layout of the Panopticon prison model itself. Panel 2 shows the watchtower beginning to multiply into what we know as surveillance cameras, and in panel 3, the panoptic quality of social media multiplies beyond control. It no longer focuses on a central watcher, but becomes a network of capillary power.

This set uses a typeface unreadable by artificial intelligence. In each panel, a portion of the titles for the symposium’s talks is unscrambled.
